Clinton: "bad idea" to link with Iran

Hillary Clinton
Clinton warned that "flirting" with Iran could have consequences.
The Secretary of State of the  U.S., Hillary Clinton, said Friday that it is a "bad idea" for Latin America to be  closer to the Iranian government and said that the policy could have "consequences" in a tone that sounded from advice and threats.
"We are very aware of the intention of Iran to promote ties with some countries such as Venezuela and Bolivia and we can only say it is really a bad idea for the countries involved," Clinton said during an appearance on U.S. diplomacy towards Latin America.
The seriousness of the warning issued by Clinton, was underlined by the wide smile spoke against the "flirting"  done by some Latin American governments
"I think if they want to flirt with Iran, they should see the impact they could have for them. And we hope you think twice and we will support you  if you do, "said Clinton, who repeated her accusations against Tehran,  considered by the US a promoter of extremist groups and against whose nuclear program Washington raises questions.
State Department sources claimed to BBC News that those "consequences" are a "broad term that does not necessarily refer to specific actions, but the potential impact on relations with these countries."

Quality of democracy

We are concerned leaders who are elected fair, free and legitimate, but after being elected to begin to undermine the constitution or the democratic order.
Hillary Clinton, U.S. Secretary of State
The U.S. diplomat had started her presentation talking about matters less ridges, as she called the regional consensus around democratic principles and said that "we must move forward" with them.
However, she warned about the quality of regional democracy and asserted that it "is not individual leaders, but strong institutions, something that Clinton acknowledged that" we have our own experience in this country. "
"We are concerned leaders who are elected fair, free and legitimate, but after being elected to begin to undermine the constitution or the democratic order," Clinton said noting that his government will express "concern" about what happens in Venezuela or Nicaragua
"We need to make an article of faith that any elected leader does not only advance in his  position or power base, but respects the rights of the people who elected him and builds more democracy so that the democratic and economic development go hand in hand.
Referring briefly to Cuba, Clinton said she expects to see in the short time "a democratic Cuba" what she considered a "positive step for the hemisphere"

She Praises  the Mexican Government

EQUALITY VS. PROSPERITY

Clinton only needs five minutes to realize that Latin America's income disparity is the biggest challenge facing the region.
However, she believes that it is not just to promote the prosperity, because "long prosperity has increased in Latin America without being distributed equitably.
"We are working with our partners to ensure (...) benefit not only to the upper layers of society."
The government of Mexico has received praise by Secretary of State Clinton  for their fight against the "horrendous violence" from the drug cartels and said Washington wants a long-term strategy that goes beyond military assistance.
"When I went to Mexico it was very controversial here in the U.S., we have some responsibility for what happens in Mexico today. That was our demand for drugs and many of our policies have helped fuel this assault on the government and people of Mexico. "
Clinton also touched on some social policies designed in Latin America that have been adapted in other parts of the world, including the U.S.
Some of them are called conditional cash transfer systems such as the Bolsa Familia in Brazil or Mexico Oportunidades, through which poor families receive cash in exchange for keeping their children at school or medical appointments.
The Mexican program has been copied by the Mayor of New York under the name of Opportunities New York.

Honduras

In her speech Secretary Clinton endorsed several points regarding the crisis in Honduras that had outlined the day before her second in charge of relations with Latin America, Arturo Valenzuela.
Clinton repeated that her government condemns the way the deposed President Manuel Zelaya was removed from power , but insisted she was committed to "helping the Hondurans to help themselves" to achieve the peaceful settlement of the crisis.
Although Washington has not officially recognized as the result of elections on 29 November, Clinton reaffirmed the U.S. qualification that the elections were clean and well-attended, and in fact referred to Porfirio "Pepe" Lobo as president-elect.
The Secretary of State stressed that her government will continue to work with other regional factors and particularly with Central American governments to overcome the crisis, based on the principle that "America can not solve all the questions (...) but can not be resolved unless U.S. is involved.
