Honduras spent yesterday (29) an election marked by abstention. However, the de facto government continues to manipulate the data stating that 61% of voters participated in the process. This is what social researcherRicardo Arturo Salgado says to an ADITAL interview. According to Salgado, the fraud in this election is clear and helps reveal the political crisis experienced by the country, where there is no democracy.
Even with the rally and strength of the Honduran people, the coup in Honduras remains unresolved. The social researcher highlights the role of the United States as complicit in this coup and the sad participation of the Organization of American States (OAS) in the search for appropriate solutions to the situation in Honduras.
Moreover, in this interview, Ricardo Salgado talks about the de facto government retribution to the people in resistance and the importance of other Latin American instances, as the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) and Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our Americas (ALBA) , for disbanding the OAS and thus make a better situation for the countries of Latin America. "That [the region] Latinoamericana survives politically, economically, environmentally and socially, the OAS must disappear," he said.
Adital - There are many reports about the low turnout and no support for the elections. What is your impression on the participation of the Honduran population and data released by the Electoral Tribunal?
Ricardo Arturo Salgado - I have visited polling stations in Tegucigalpa in popular areas, and it was clear that participation was limited, low. Abstention rates presented yesterday by the TSE [Supreme Electoral Court] have very clear inconsistencies. For example, they argue that turnout was 61% of registered voters. However, according to the electoral roll had 4.7 million registered voters and 2.5 million voted. A simple math shows you that participation was not what they say. There is a huge manipulation of data.
Adital - Arbitrary arrests, repression ... the process was largely military. What are the consequences of this militarization at a time that should be democratic?
Ricardo Arturo Salgado - There was repressed during the entire previous week, intensifying the 28th, culminating with a lot of intimidation yesterday. There's even a Uruguayan journalist, I think, hurt. It should be clear to everyone yesterday that the process was not democratic. The repression was, is and will remain a part of the overall strategy used to destroy democracy in Honduras. As all this the consequences are terrible, but it gives rise to a better positioning of the popular struggle. Fraud is so obvious that you can promote whatever they want without the Honduran people no longer understand that there is no democracy here, and we live in a circus in fact.
Adital - How is the weather today after the election results?
Ricardo Arturo Salgado - Right now there are two events of Resistance: an assembly and a motorcade in the afternoon. So far no incidents occurred. If no media coverage, you may let any progress normally. Otherwise you may suppress the caravan. In the rest of the country also offer activities not reported problems at this time. Do not forget that no matter what numbers are correct, the winner of this was the people that turned out. Most is still pending events and still struggle.
Adital - Is the U.S. position of recognizing the election was ultimately to legitimize the coup and dictatorship in which the Honduran people currently living?
Ricardo Arturo Salgado - United States was complicit in the coup, was involved in the same since 2008. Recognize the elections is part of the script that they wrote. Let's look tacit recognition that the coup is when you miss the "ball" Oscar Arias, at that moment leave aside the resolutions of the OAS and the UN [United Nations Union] who demanded immediate and unconditional refund President Zelaya. Same OAS has a role in all this sad and we can not rule out that embedded asset is an accomplice after the fact.
The game of consensus was more damaging than any gringo position. This is America, and they are directly responsible for what happened and will continue happening in Honduras. Note that the survey company hired by the TSE is funded by USAID. They were involved in the fraud until last night actively.
Having set my view my answer to your question is that the decision to a coup, taken by the Pentagon, State Department and United States of America were pseudo factor legitimizing the dictatorship. But another thing is what do the people, of which emanates the legitimacy or otherwise of the actions of their leaders.
Adital - Do you think that UNASUR, Alba and others are capable of turning around or make a stronger appeal to the current situation?
Ricardo Arturo Salgado - I am convinced that Latin American countries should adopt a firmer stance and take a step forward in the dismantling of the OAS. The history of this organization always result in serious consequences for our people. I think that if the countries of UNASUR, ALBA, that pose a strong stance against the very existence of the OAS, an option, a possibility that the coup in Honduras is reversed, and, above all, to prevent more attacks against other African countries.
Our governments should consider withdrawing from the OAS if not rectified the actions committed against the people of Honduras. If countries like Brazil, Venezuela, Ecuador and many other historical chains break with this monster called OAS will best choices to live in peace, always watching our borders and our internal fronts but at peace. For [a região] Latinoamericana survive politically, economically, environmentally and socially, the OAS should disappear.
This is my opinion. Today depends on UNASUR, ALBA, that accepting the immediate consequences, which will mean the division between popular and rightist governments in the Americas.
