Garifuna Ciriboya HOSPITAL Under Military Invasion
Yesterday at five o'clock in the morning Ciriboya Garifuna Hospital, was raided by members of the Preventive Police and soldiers who stormed the compound through a window. In the operation was made about fifteen elements, which claimed to be participating in a narcotics operation.
This action by elements of the Ministry of Security and Defense, is added to the persecution that is happening in our country against the national resistance to the coup. Days before the Ministry of Health dismissed the hospital making it a simple health center, to the detriment of the Garifuna and Mestizo Iriona Township.
Ciriboya Hospital is home to the project Luagu Hatuadi Waduhenu, Garifuna popular first hospital, which is a model of medical care in Honduras, attended by doctors graduated from the ELAM (Escuela Latinoamericana de Medicina) based in Cuba.
The social function that has been performing graduates of ELAM in Honduras in contrast to other Honduran doctors, who have been reluctant to provide services in rural areas of the country.
Ciriboya Hospital was built with support from unions in California's own syndicate efforts as well as Garifuna people, through Dr. Luther Castillo, who under the current circumstances has been among the most oustanding persons defending democracy and construction of a national project for everyone, including the requirement of a constituent assembly.
The isolation of Garifuna communities living in Walumugu Iriona has been exploited by drug traffickers in cahoots with the local power elite, who have used desolate places to make their landings, with logistical support from bands associated with the national power elite.
The complex phenomenon of drug trafficking in Honduras, especially in the north coast has been going on for decades, without so far there being decisive measures to change the route of the situation. It is common knowledge who are untouchables linked to the illicit business, those who persist in using their oil palm plantations and pseudoclandestine airports, but the economic power possessed by them ensures the acquittal in advance of any crime.
Storming the hospital is a clear message to the Garifuna people for their participation - especially Dr Castillo and staff of the Hospital - in resisting the coup. OFRANEH for punitive action against the Hospital, is another example of racism that prevails between the armies of rebels, who view the medical support of the Cuban literacy campaigns which have been made in some parts of the country, and medicine in a social vision as a threat to the feudal system prevailing in the country.
We wonder if indeed there is "intelligence" between the security forces, and to proceed to prepare the hospital, claiming the day before a plane had landed allegedly carrying drugs in the surrounding communities.
For our Garifuna people, breaking into the Ciriboya Hospital is showing more aggression as one of the primary objectives of the de facto government, which is to destroy the vision of community and promoting violence. It is incredible that one of the paradigms in community health at the continental level, is attacked by a government formed by a dome of mercenaries working for Southern Command and the banana companies, telephone and oil companies who want to preserve the status quo in Honduras .
