Opened new U.S. military base in Honduras
ABN .- A new U.S. military base, supposedly to combat drug trafficking, was inaugurated Thursday in Honduras.
This was announced by the Website Telesur, quoting the U.S. ambassador, Hugo Llorens, who said his country had invested two million dollars in the construction of military facilities, and donated four boats and provided advisers.
The naval base is located in the northeastern department of Gracias a Dios in the border with Nicaragua, has a multifunctional building and an operations center that contributes to the increased capacity to accommodate more staff and as a pier for mooring of boats on patrol.
In addition, the diplomat explained that the base will be coordinated by the Navy of Honduras, assisted by officers of the U.S. military's Southern Command.
The U.S. already has a military installation in that Central American nation in Palmerola, in the central department of Comayagua, and has capacity for the landing of large aircrafts due to the length of its runway.
It should be mentioned that despite the White House denied any support for the coup against the constitutional president, Manuel Zelaya, the Palmerola base was the site where he was initially taken , after his deposal on 28 June 2009.

US-Marinebasis in Honduras eingeweiht
