José Leonel Alvarez Guerra (35), a member of the Cooperative La Confianza of the Unified Movement of Farmers of Aguán, MUCA, was killed by two men on a motorcycle, when he was arriving home, in the neighborhood Manga Seca in Tocoa, Colón, on Wednesday April 07.
The modus operandi of the perpetrators of this crime has the same characteristics as the ones that had already been denounced by the farmers in earlier days, when they noted that a group of 30 men were being trained by Billy Joya Amendola, a member of Death Squadron 3 - 16 in the 1980's and who, since June 28, 2009, when the coup against President Manuel Zelaya Rosales was carried out, remains very active and served the Roberto Micheletti regime as security adviser.
The situation has worsened in the last hours in Aguán, after the regime rejected a counterproposal from the MUCA, which states the independence its members wish with regards to the landowners over the cultivation of African palm, on which the latter intend to keep the farmers as servants. The movement of the paramilitary, police, and military has intensified in recent hours. Furthermore, the Peasant Movement of Aguán, MCA, sought to recover some 700 hectares of land on land that was occupied by the Regional Military Training Center, CREM and which now, was occupied by landowner Miguel Facussé.
The crime against the farmer, José Leonel Alvarez Guerra, was committed at about 11:20 am, in the moment when he came home from the village Taujica, where he along with several of his colleagues had recovered the lands since December 2009.
The two individuals, who drove a red motorcycle, shot him five times in different parts of the body and ran away immediately. Afterwards, Guerra Alvarez was taken to Hospital Tocoa, where he died instantly.
So far, during the recovery of State-owned land and land subjected to agrarian reform, but which has been appropriated by the landowners Miguel Facussé, René Morales, and Reinaldo Canales, about six deaths and assaults against men and women have taken place, who, due to the product of hunger and landlessness, have decided to risk their physical integrity in order to solve their problem, on which no response whatsoever has been envisioned by the current regime.
The platform of Human Rights visited the area between March 20 and 22 and evidenced a very critical situation regarding human rights violations. The visit to six settlements, where, in addition, the peasants are subjected to unsanitary conditions, contrasts with the situation of insecurity.
During that visit, the COFADEH documented several complaints ranging from constant pressure by hooded men, who move stealthily and track members of cooperatives, in which the farmers are grouped, to constant attacks with firearms directed against the huts where the peasants live, causing constant anxiety.
Security guards, who mobilize with ski masks and armed to the teeth in full view of the authorities, who look the other way, police, and military are all involved in the harassment operations.
