Inter-American Commission on Human Rights requests permission to come to Honduras as urgent |
WASHINGTON (AFP) - Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) asked on Wednesday to visit Honduras interim regime as a matter of urgency, to examine allegations of human rights violations following the return of ousted President Manuel Zelaya. "The IACHR has received information about violence and the reinstatement of the curfew at the expense of the enjoyment of human rights in Honduras," said the letter, which had access to AFP. "Therefore, the Commission has decided to request the conduct of a visit to Honduras on an urgent basis, in order to verify as soon as the validity of human rights," he added. The letter was sent to the "National Congress President and President of the Supreme Court" in Honduras, it was impossible to send Zelaya himself, taking refuge in the Brazilian embassy. The return of Zelaya, toppled and the country in June, through a coup, sparked rioting.The regime decided to immediately enact a curfew throughout the country. According to human rights activists, hundreds of people were arrested in the last 48 hours in Honduras. The IACHR staged a visit to the Central American country of 17 to 21 August, which ended in a scathing report against the de facto regime. |
