"We're going to throw your head, asshole, you still have a few days", was what was told to Carlos H. Reyes, leader of the People's National Resistance Front, in a threat through his cell phone from a landline number, where a man with deep voice repeated the death sentence three times, according to complaints of the affected to the Committee of Relatives of Detained and Disappeared in Honduras, COFADEH.
Carlos H. Reyes has appeared on several death lists and although during the year 2009, he along with Bertha Oliva, coordinator of COFADEH filed the complaint to the Human Rights Commissioner, Ramon Custodio Lopez, himself, he only used the complaint to fill the spaces in the report provided to Congress last March, where besides justifying the deaths of members of the resistance, he said he was aware of the complaint, but didn't take any action to stop any attack against the two leaders.
On May 20, 2010 at 6:00 pm, Calos H. Reyes received a call on his cell phone from the number 226 99 65, and when he answered, the voice on the other side of the line said with a deep voice "We will throw your head , asshole, you still have a few days." Before the unexpected, Carlos said "hello" and the subject would repeat the threat "we'll throw your head, asshole, you still have a few days." This situation was repeated thrice.
These threats occur in a context of media disinformation in which a division within the National Resistance Front has appeared. This is a campaign happening when the front makes the collection of signatures to demand a National Constituent Assembly to return the country to democratic and constitutional order.
Over the past two months this type of strategies of disinformation and disqualification of opposition leaders to then attack them have been implemented, in some cases with irreparable damage.
In the same period eight (8) people of the National Resistance Front have been killed.Twenty-five (25) face death threats and twenty-six (26) have been forced to leave the country to preserve their life and integrity.
The threatened person has precautionary measures but the State has never implemented them
The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, IACHR granted him precautionary measures, but so far he is still waiting for the State to assume responsibility to investigate the source of the threats.
Between June and November 2009, the headquarters of the Union of Soft Drinks and Similars Industry Workers , STIBYS, from which Carlos H. Reyes is part, has been under surveillance and has been militarized in crucial moments of repression against the people of Honduras.
On July 26, unidentified assailants exploded a grenade inside the STIBYS, also during the month of August, strangers fired against its facilities, and in the months of July, August, September and November last year, tanks and military commands installed in front of their offices. The STIBYS is the headquarters of the Resistance and hosting site for Resistance demonstrators coming from inside the country.
On July 30, 2009, agents of the Preventive Police fractured the right arm of the popular leader, while they beat him with clubs and hurled insults, "Aha, you're the old man who wants to be my President, here are your votes" .
Carlos H. Reyes was an independent candidate running for the Presidencyof the Republic for the November 2009 elections, candidature to which he quit due to the coup d'etat of June 28, 2009.
In urgent action due to the danger Carlos H. Reyes's life runs, Cofadeh asked the national and international community to demand the State of Honduras to take all necessary measures to ensure effective mechanisms to protect the life and integrity of the leader Carlos H. Reyes. Reyes. Similarly COFADEH asks to ensure effective protection for all social activists and the right to defend universally recognized human rights, as stated in the Universal Declaration of United Nations Defenders, adopted in 1998 and the OAS Resolution of 1999 and 2000.
