Olayo Sorto's assassination : another political crime against the peoples' resistance

Olayo Sorto Hernandez was killed last May 18

The Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH) will do whatever is  necessary to find those guilty of killing  Olayo Sorto  Hernandez (38), classified as another political crime according to the statements of the Indian Bertha Cáceres.

Cáceres said that "we  will document this crime very well, it will not go unpunished, we will fight so that justice is applied, we will turn  to national and international resources."

The COPINH leader accompanied the relatives of Sorto Hernandez who presented the complaint to the Committee of Relatives of Detained and Disappeared in Honduras (Cofadeh) regarding the events at Llano Grande, Colomoncagua, department of  Intibucá where their relative was foully murdered.

On Tuesday May 18, Olayo Sorto Hernandez was with his family when he received several phone calls to his cell phone from a person who insisted they should meet in a place outside of Llano Grande, very close to his home in Colomoncagua , where he was ambushed and killed by strangers.

After the attack his body was taken to a place known as Quebrachitos, where in the early eighties  the National Security Doctrine was fully applied a Salvadoran refugee camp was installed  in the  Honduras-El Salvador border.

"When the population found out about his murder,  they went out,  because he was a very dear person, much appreciated, he had no problems with anyone and as a child he worked on armory with his dad, fixing  radios and working tools for agriculture," Bertha Cáceres  told defensoresenlínea.com.

She added that in late February and late March  Olayo Sorto Hernandez had been arrested by police at the request of persons who supported the coup and who had been besieging several members of the popular resistance.

"Even his wife Erlinda had been arrested by police, hence there is already a record. We know that the coup leaders had been accusing him of having  weapons in the communal house for the resistance, that he  was arming the resistance, well, a lot of slander, so we know the background of the murder of Olayo is a political crime. It is because he was from the COPINH, because he is Indian, because he is from the resistance, and because of his struggle. "

There  is  no  police investigation of this crime, they even denounced  that Olayo's wife, Erlinda, filed the complaint with the community court, but the judge refused to go to the crime scene because he was afraid.

The COPINH  leader denounced the presence of  military vehicles in the area that are used by U.S. troops stationed in the Palmerota Air Base, Comayagua.

"We hold responsible these Palmerota US American  troops , who  are besieging the Friendship and Meeting Center  Utopia, which belongs to  COPINH and we know that in here not only  eavesdroppers  and agents of the National Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DNIC) are being used, or of the Tenth Battalion which has made continuous deployment  when protests, work and training of our organization  take place, " she explained.

Caceres said it is important to note that the entire  military-police siege and harassment has affected indigenous youths, "especially now that signatures for the Sovereign Declaration for the  Constitutional Assembly are being collected, repression has escalated. We know of comrades who have been threatened by anonymous people in Santa Elena, Marcala, La Esperanza, San Marcos de la Sierra, Colomoncagua and in other regions.

After the coup  " they are taking our area, as a very particular area  where they intend to intimidate the Lenca Indians who are in a process of struggle along  with the  peoples' resistance, therefore they besiege our radio  stations, our offices, there are proceedings  which have been imposed by  the multinational corporations  that have interests in our resources, the richness of our land and we know that they are from  the companies Terra, Enersa, Inversa, Ríos  Power, and Miguel Facussé, Chukry Kafie, and Fredy Nasser are behind this.
