They denounce persecution in Honduras against anti-coup judges.

Tegucigalpa, Nov 4 (Prensa Latina) The Association of Judges for Democracy in Honduras (AJD) denounced a campaign by the Supreme Court against the judges who spoke out against the military coup last June.

The National Board of the organization stated in a statement sent to Prensa Latina that the Court authorities continue their arbitrary actions of political persecution against the judges who supported the restoration of the rule of law in the nation.

Add to this atmosphere of harassment is maintained even though in Honduras begins to glimpse the possibility of initiating a process of national reconciliation, to make possible a return to a climate of harmony and tranquility.

Among the reprisals ordered by the Court cites the removal of administrative position of Coordinator of the court in the northern city of San Pedro Sula's lawyer Mauricio García Mateo, Vocal I Board of Directors of the Association.

Other cases are hearing the summons to discharge to Guillermo Lopez, trial judge and chairman of the board of the AJD, for participating in a peaceful demonstration on July 5.

He notes that similar action was initiated against Luis Chévez, Judge of domestic violence, for being illegally detained by police on August 14 and express their views on the actions of the judiciary in this political crisis.

Just as was ordered by the Court against Ramon Barrios, Judge Sentencing of San Pedro Sula, for demonstrating a legal opinion regarding the breakdown of constitutional order.

The AJD indicated in disciplinary investigations retaliation against judge of the central city of Comayagua, Juan Carlos Zelaya, currently Vice President of the Board of the AJD.

All these actions are being perpetrated by the authorities of the Supreme Court, violated the due process of law because we are not providing the adequate time and facilities to prepare his defense, says the Association.

He adds that disrespects the presumption of innocence and there is no possibility to challenge decisions before an independent and impartial tribunal, among other violations.

The Association also requires the Supreme Court to end the persecution against those who asserted their rights of conscience and free expression.

The judges of the Supreme Court in late August endorsed the overthrow of President Manuel Zelaya, who early on June 28 was abducted by hooded soldiers and forced out of the country.
