Attacks against the Garifuna Community radio Triunfo de la Cruz

Today, in the early morning hours, community radio Falun Bimetu suffered an attack by unknown individuals who set fire to the place where it was installed a Garifuna community radio.

Falun Bimetu has more than a decade of life, which has focused on strengthening the Garifuna culture, while participating in the creation of an early warning system, programs addressing HIV / AIDS, and provide general information beyond usual distortion that is often promoted by the mass media.

Garifuna community radio stations serve a social function without any spirit of greed, especially of Falun Bimetu, which had been broadcasting from an area that the Honduran power elite has become highly controversial, given the interest that financial groups have over Garifuna communities to move away in order  to use our beaches in their tourism projects.

In recent years the Municipality of Tela has divided the community through a Board (local government state figure) parallel, related to the interests of tourism entrepreneurs. The Falun Bimetu radio has been one of the standard-bearers in the defense of ancestral land.

Eyewitnesses of the attack  say the destruction of the building where the radio was also included the theft of equipment. The fact that this occurred is an enormous loss to the community of Triunfo de la Cuz and the Garifuna people in general.
