MADJ denounces police harassment

The Broad Movement for Dignity and Justice (MADJ), circulated a statement claiming that two police chiefs have tried to intimidate people who attended the  popular demonstration held on February 26 in defense of natural resources that have been privatized in Masica, Atlántida.

The MADJ noted that the area sheriffs Mejia Lopez and Beltran have been devoted to make phone calls and visits to the homes of several colleagues who participated in actions against the destruction of natural resources.

They add that the partner and active member of MADJ, Martin Fernandez was the victim of police harassment.

Below we reproduce the full text released by the MADJ.

PUBLIC STATEMENT AND COMPLAINTS

The Broad Movement for Dignity and Justice to the people of Honduras and the International Community reports:

That recent developments in our country, clearly reflecting the spurious government's repressive policies of Mr. Porfirio Lobo Sosa as a result of rigged elections produced under the dictatorship of Roberto Micheletti, whose next stage seeks to silence the voices of protest from a social movement that has historically demanded justice and dignity to the abuses, violence, corruption and injustice of political and business class.

Different organizations of the department of Atlantida have taken a commitment to protecting and safeguarding the natural resources of the area. In its action organizations have found that many water sources and forests are under concession to several companies, without consulting the communities, in light of the above they have produced a series of public demonstrations demanding the authorities of the State of Honduras and the same companies, the cessation of operations that endanger the lives and safety of people in this department.

On February 6 2010 several demonstrations of citizenship against the operation of hydroelectric companies took place, under the visible environmental damage they have caused and for the ineffectiveness of the authorities, who despite possessing complaints , having inspected the area and noting the seriousness of the damage, they express being a silent accomplice. Among the companies that have begun operations in the area is CONTEMPO which belongs to the TERRA Group, whose principal shareholders are Mr. MIGUEL FACUSSE BARJÚM AND SELMAN Fredy Nasser, who confront the public in many parts of the country they have appropiated . The company operates in the municipalities of La Masica and Sparta.

The MADJ considered an act of intimidation the behavior assumed by the police chiefs in the area commissioners Mejía López and Beltrán, who have dedicated themselves to phone calls and visit the homes of several colleagues who participated in actions against the destruction of natural resources, among these people fellow MARTÍN FERNÁNDEZ, MADJ active member.

We will not get tired of denouncing, we will not get tired of fighting, even under the dictatorship Hondurans have dignity and will not allow them to rob us our natural resources, destroy our environment and violate our human rights.
